An 1860 chromolithograph on paper created by German-American artist Julius Bien (1826 – 1909) as part of a series after the original 1827-38 lithographs created by famed American ornithologist and artist John James Audubon (1785 – 1851) for publication in Birds of America. This print is titled Pileated Woodpecker and was printed as Plate 257. It depicts four of the birds on a raccoon grape plant. The print is marked ‘Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S.’ and ‘Chromolith.y by J. Bien, New York 1860’ to the lower corners. It is matted in yellow with several hand-drawn French lines and is presented behind glass in a gold tone wooden frame with a hanging wire.

Condition

- paper is slightly yellowed with age.
