Antique Handwoven Signed Kyrgyz Wool Soumak Bag Face
Item Details
An antique handwoven signed Kyrgyz soumak bag face, likely from the Central Asian region of Kyrgystan. This wool rug is constructed with a soumak chain stitch and rendered in a palette of indigo, sage, salmon, blush, lavender, and eggshell. The field features a pair of zig-zag motifs, infilled with hooked cruciforms, combs, and triangular patterns. Framing the field are crenellated guard and secondary borders, displaying ram’s horn and geometric designs over lavender and eggshell. The rug is finished with contemporary fabric backing, hand finished selvedges, and a partially legible embroidered signature reading ‘Helena Knoch 1914’.
