Janvier Louis-Juste (Croix des Bouquets, Haiti; 20th-Century)
Untitled, n.d.
Recycled steel cut and sculpted
12’ W x 25.5’ H x .25’ D

A Haitian vodou art cut steel sculpture, attributed to Janvier Louis-Juste (Croix des Bouquets, Haiti; 20th-Century). Comprised of cut and sculptured recycled steel, this work features a intertwining of birds and a serpent creature, typical of Louis-Juste’s style. Details are engraved throughout the surface along with some faint delineations. Slight protrustions throughout the surface add dimension to the figures. The work is unsigned.

Along with his brothers Seresier and Joseph, Haitian sculptor Javier Louis-Juste was trained by famed artist Georges Liautaud, the originator of Haitian metals. He and his brothers were instrumental in continuing the legacy of their instructor by teaching younger generations of metal artists working in Croix-des-Bouquets. Their work has been exhibited in various galleries in Haiti and the United States.
