A gouache painting on paper of an abstract seated figure by American artist W. Glen Davis (20th Century). This work is portrayed in the artist’s signature style featuring thick bold outlines, simple shapes, fragmented forms, and rough splotches of vibrant colors. Signed ‘WG Davis’ in pen ink to the lower right, the work is not mounted and remains unframed.

W. Glen Davis was an original member of the modern art Outlines Gallery in downtown Pittsburgh, which was started by Betty Rockwell in 1941. In addition, he was a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, and a founding member of the Art and Crafts Center, Society of Sculptors and the Abstract Group. During the 1940s, he studied with Amédée Ozenfant (French, 1886-1966) – founder of the Purist Movement and the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts in New York. Davis’ work was also exhibited at the first post-war survey of Abstract and Surrealist American art held at the Art Institute of Chicago in the winter of 1947-8.

Condition

- some wear to paper edges, including curling and small tears; small tear present to upper right surface of paper; small perforations along paper edges from previous display.
