A set of 20th century West African carved wooden ladles. This set includes a Baule ladle from Côte d’Ivoire featuring incised decorative geometric patterns. Although probably never used, this ladle is a principal example of local craftsmanship. Also included is a Dan ladle from Côte d’Ivoire/Liberia, which depicts a woman’s head and three rings to her neck signifying good health. Ritual ladles were prestigious gifts given to distinguished women for their generosity and hospitality.
