WWII Siege of Bastogne Commemorative Repoussé Brass Plaque

A WWII era Siege of Bastogne commemorative repoussé brass plaque. The piece features a scene of a German officer offering surrender terms to American General Anthony McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne with the term communicated in response by McAuliffe, ‘Nuts!’ in a banner between them. The two figures are above an illustration of the town of Bastogne and it is marked with ‘Airborne’ to the top. The piece features a stippled border with ‘Bastogne’ and stars in relief and the date DEC 44 to the lower part of the border. The back is marked ‘Made in Couvin Belgium Patent’. The manufacturer of these plaques is unknown, and it has been reported that these plaques were made from the shell casings left at the Siege of Bastogne, an engagement that was part of the larger Battle of the Bulge.
