An oil painting on board titled Female Portrait (Antioch College Study) by listed artist Robert Whitmore (American; 1890-1979), dated circa 1949. This work depicts the bust-length portrait of a woman with a perturbed expression portrayed from a three-quarter profile and comprised of gestural brushstrokes. The composition is unsigned and marked with artist’s estate stamp to the verso. Additionally to the verso, artist’s name and date are inscribed. This composition is presented in a wood frame.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
