An oil painting on canvas titled North of Dayton, Late May by well-listed Ohio-based artist Robert Whitmore (1890-1979), dated 1919. This work features a waterscape comprised of a reflective body of water surrounded by a lush forested area located in Dayton, Ohio. The composition is comprised of gestural brushwork and a subdued sense of motion. The piece is unsigned, although artist’s name, title and date and inscribed to the verso. The composition is presented in a wooden box frame.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
