Hisashi Otsuka was born in Japan and is known for his historical and traditional textile design prints. He came from an artistic family and apprenticed for eight years with a skilled Kimono designer, Taeko Jo. He cooked and cleaned brushes for the first three years of his apprenticeship before he was allowed to begin creating his own art. Once established, Otsuka moved to Hawaii in 1979 and became greatly influenced by the Western aesthetic from which emerged a neo-deco style to his work.
