20th Century Yoruba/Nigerian Beaded Crown

A 20th century Yoruba/Nigerian beaded crown (ade ileke), conical in shape with five yellow stylized beaded birds piled atop and round faces with molded noses and blue eyes comprising the sides. The colorful fringe hanging from the bottom rim is meant to distract any onlookers from seeing the face of the King (oba) and to concentrate on the beauty of the crown and the crown has interesting birds branching out from the sides. The round faces have intricate geometric patterning on the foreheads and cheeks and are traditionally representations of the King’s ancestors. The crown has a metal brace on the interior to keep the shape and to support the crown on a pole and base for display purposes.
