J.T. Abernathy Wheel Thrown Stoneware Bowl

Item Details

A thrown stoneware bowl from the studio of J. T Abernathy. The Ann Arbor Michigan potter has been acclaimed for his work blending the functional with the artistic as well as the creation of purely decorative art. Abernathy, a World War II veteran, has worked in the medium for over sixty years. This planter has embellishment in the form of abstract foliage and horizontal stripes in goldenrod over a white ground. The tightness of the decoration requires great skill to avoid overlapping, thus creating a visual muddying of the design. There is an incised signature on the base reading “JT”.

Abernathy’s work has been displayed in museums in Amsterdam, Toronto and Tokyo and across the United States. He has a BFA in Ceramics and an MFA in Kiln-Building from the Cranbrook Academy of Arts.
