An original ink and watercolor painting on paper by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The piece depicts two abstracted figures painted in broad strokes of watercolor overlaid with loose, gestural lines in shades of magenta and green.The piece is unsigned, but the artist’s estate stamp is visible to the verso. The piece is presented without matting or framing, awaiting your choice of presentation.
Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
