An antique oil painting on canvas by an anonymous artist dated to the late 19th century. This work depicts a schoolhouse portrait of a young boy puzzled over his arithmatic slate, seated on a stool with a softly-lit, plain backdrop. It is unsigned and presented in a gilt wood frame with wire to the verso for hanging.

Condition

- fine craqulure throughout painting; evidence of significant restoration includes inpainting and overpainting throughout figures face, hands, and clothing, with additional overpainting to slate frame and background, a generally smooth surface with evidence of prior varnish, restretched canvas, fabric backing applied to canvas, and heavy varnish to verso edges of canvas; some scuffs, chips, and scratches to gilding on frame; upper right corner join of frame seperating.
