Antique Federal Mahogany Shield-Back Chair with Vintage Chippendale Style Chairs
Item Details
An antique Federal mahogany shield-back chair with two vintage Chippendale style chairs. The Federal side chair features a pierced back carved with a Prince of Wales feather at the top above drapery swags continuing to a relief-carved flowerhead at the bottom. The partially-upholstered, serpentine-front seat is stuffed with horsehair and the chair rises on square, tapered legs in the front. The interior of the rear seat rail is applied with a round, metal tag marked ‘Mehetable C. / Emerson / 1790’. The chair dates to this period and was probably made in New York. Also included are two vintage Chippendale style side chairs, one being a mahogany, ribbon-back example and the other being in cherry with an openwork, vasiform splat.
