A pair of mixed media paintings on paper by American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). Each abstract composition features an under layer of broad, loose brushwork, overlaid by diagonal strips of tissue collaged onto the painting, creating complex compositions. These pieces are unsigned, and are marked to the verso with a stamp from the artist’s estate. They are both presented in a white mat, wrapped in protective plastic.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows: ‘having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind.’ After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil.
