"Ne-O-Mon-Ni" McKenney & Hall Hand Tinted Lithograph and Text

Item Details

Unsigned

An antique McKenney & Hall hand tinted lithograph titled Ne-O-Mon-Ni An Ioway Chief. This print was taken from the octavo version of History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785 – 1859) served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1824 to 1830, and had portraits of Native American chiefs commissioned for his gallery in the War Department. He was intent on publishing and recording the history of vanishing North American Indians. James Hall (1793 – 1868) provided the text. Originally issued in large folio size, McKenney had the book reprinted in a smaller octavo size and published by Rice, Rutter & Co. between 1865 and 1870. The original text by James Hall describing Neomonni and his deeds, is also included with this print.
