A woodcut on paper titled Santa Maria del Oro by American artist Carol Summers (1925-2016), created in 1984. This work features large fields and organic shapes in green blues, and a semicircular red accent at the top. The work is mounted on an off-white background. It is presented under glass in a composite wood frame with a white finish. Adhered to the verso are labels from the Powers Gallery and the Randall Beck Gallery.

Born in upstate New York, Carol Summers was raised in Woodstock and received his art training at Bard College and the Art Students League in New York with Steven Hirsh and Louis Schanker. It was in the 1950s that he became interested in colored woodcuts which eventually became his specialty in monumental sizes, utilizing his unique ‘rubbing’ technique. His work has been collected and exhibited by multiple institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.
