A vintage hand-knotted Nahavand wool area rug. The Persian rug, from the Hamadan Province of Iran, has a charcoal black background with a center medallion in cobalt blue, crimson red and ochre infilled with a smaller medallion featuring geometric forms. The gray background has an overall geometric patterning in shades of cobalt blue, ochre, terra cotta and red. The rug has a major border in cream, cobalt blue, ochre and red featuring geometric forms, flanked by Greek key and floral guard stripes in ocher, with cobalt banding to each side. The rug has a red bound border to the sides and bound white cotton warp to the ends. The rug is unmarked.
