As the co-founder of Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh is best known for his musical endeavors. A talented visual artist, Mothersbaugh combines numerous techniques for his visual arts including rubber stamps, mail art, ink illustrations, vinyl decals, and screen printing. From 1968 – 1972, Mothersbaugh studied fine arts at Kent University. The 1970 shootings deeply impacted the artist, informing a lifelong personal philosophy of “de-evolution” in humanity. This philosophy is reflected in major themes and tensions in the artist’s work. Mothersbaugh has exhibited extensively throughout the United States. Notable travelling exhibitions include Homefront Invasion! (2003), Beautiful Mutants (2004), Postcard Diaries (2011), and the retrospective Mark Mothersbaugh: Myopia (2014).
