18th Century Hester Bateman Sterling Silver Tablespoon

A late 18th century sterling silver tablespoon by celebrated London silversmith Hester Bateman. Bateman was one of the first female silversmiths, taking over her husband’s business upon his death, and running it for thirty years. She is widely considered to be one of the finest English silversmiths of the 18th century and is best known for producing quality silver items in the Neoclassical style. This spoon has stamped sawtooth edge design with a cartouche at the end featuring a three-initial monogram. To the verso, it is stamped with Hester Bateman’s HB mark, the London leopard, the English sterling lion passant, and ‘f’ for 1781. Total item weight is 1.930 ozt.
