Item Details
An antique mahogany and poplar child’s rope bed, Mount Hope Plantation, Mississippi, 19th century. The four-poster frame retains remnants of an old, if not original, alligatored finish. It consists of a headboard and foot board, both of which have rolling pin crests over outscrolled panels. Flanking the panels are block-and-turned posts with cannonball finials and cylindrical legs. The ends are joined by poplar side rails with raised, rope pegs and the sleeping platform is fitted with a strand of later rope.

Condition
- to fair; scattered scratches, small scuffs, and nicks; bed was probably a larger size at one time and cut down/shortened, as is evident by the central, joint seams on the headboard and foot board; interior corner of foot board rail with an area of former pest damage (worming); a couple of small losses where upper part of headboard meets left post; some other minor wear and imperfections as would be expected with age and use.
