An oil painting on canvas by Italian-American artist Gerard Tempest (1918-2009). Exhibiting the artist’s signature style of highlights forms and gradient colors, this work features radiant blue, green, and purple ribbons hanging horizontally across the composition. No signature was found on the work. It is titled Drappegio on the stretcher. It is presented in a simple wood frame. Included with the painting is an exhibition catalog titled Gerard Tempest: Abstract Spiritualism published 1991 by the Bergen Museum.
Recognized as the father of Abstract Spiritualism, Gerard Tempest was a painter, sculptor, architect, and World War II veteran who emigrated from Italy to the United States in 1929. He studied at the Boston Museum School under artists Max Beckmann and Oscar Kokoschka; upon returning to Italy in 1948, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti and under the private tutelage of famed Surrealist forerunner Girogio de Chirico who recognized him as his protégé. He is known for his abstract paintings the exhibit vibrant swirling colors and dramatic light emanating throughout the forms. His work has been collected by the Vatican Museum and exhibited by multiple institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Bergen Museum, among others.
