Antique George I Oak Slant-Front Bible Box on Later Stand
Item Details
An antique George I oak slant-front Bible box on a later stand, early 18th century. The box features a rectangular, molded top continuing to a hinged, slant-lid, which is centered by a round, brass escutcheon plate and a hand-engraved, brass mount. It opens to a storage well with two small drawers, both of which retain later printed labels ‘C.R. Fenton & Co. Ltd. / Beachy Road, / Old Ford, E.3.’ The exterior, front panel is carved ‘17 TP 23’ flanking a central, iron lock plate. The box rests on a later, oak stand with four Marlborough legs joined by an H-stretcher.
