An oil painting on board titled East from Sonora Pass by listed American artist Irion Shields (1895 – 1983). This work features an elevated view of a mountainous landscape, portrayed in a post-impressionist manner with thick daubs of rich pigments adjacently applied throughout the composition. The painting is signed and titled in graphite to the board verso. It is presented in a textural gold-tone gesso and wood frame.
Irion Shields was raised in Texas and moved to California in 1932. In Sacramento, he was employed as a sign painter for McClellan Air Force Base for forty years. At his leisure, he produced landscapes, seascapes, and harbor scenes of Sacramento and the Mother Lode area.
