Artist attribution to the verso, written by the artist’s son Jon

An oil painting on paperboard by Robert H. Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979). This piece depicts a woman’s portrait in quick, gestural applications of paint. It is unsigned. A stamp to the verso states that the piece is from the artist’s estate, and there is an inscribed attribution from the artist’s son Jon that reads, ‘Study by Robert H. Whitmore at Antioch College circa 1948’. This piece is presented mounted to a foam core backing and unframed.

Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
