An oil painting on board titled Minning’s Barn, Lyons Lake, New York by well-listed Ohio-based artist Robert Whitmore (1890-1979), dated 1922. This work depicts a vibrant rustic landscape featuring a red barn situated among a verdant rural territory hovered by a gestural cloudy sky. The composition is comprised of loose brushwork and luminous pigments. The piece is unsigned, although the artist’s estate stamp and an informational label are present to the verso. Additionally, a handwritten inscription including title and date are inscribed to the verso. The work is presented in a wooden box frame.

Born in Dayton, Ohio, Robert Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1913 to 1917. Subsequently, he served in World War I for a year, then continued his studies at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He is particularly known for his Ohioan landscapes painted en plein air, exhibiting loose impressionistic brushstrokes and brilliant vibrant colors. To accommodate working outdoors, he turned a Model T truck into his personal mobile studio. Whitmore was an art professor at Antioch College until his retirement in 1955, and his work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Dayton Art Institute, the National Academy of Design, and various galleries in Ohio.
