An oil painting on canvas by Robert H. Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979). This piece depicts a mid century portrait of a woman wearing a round pink fur hat, gold lewelry, and deep red lipstick. It is unsigned. A stamp to the verso states that the piece is from the artist’s estate, and there is an inscribed attribution from the artist’s son Jon that reads, ‘Study by Robert H. Whitmore at Antioch College circa 1948’. There is an additional figure study painted to the verso of the canvas. This piece is presented unframed as a stretched canvas.
Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
