Vintage Modernist Percival Lafer Rosewood and Leather Lounge Chair and Ottoman

Item Details

A vintage Modernist rosewood and brown leather lounge chair and ottoman by Percival Lafer, manufactured by Brazil Industries Corporation, circa 1970s. Often dubbed the ‘Earth chair’, the egg-shaped frame has an angled back, with grid stitching between the button-tufted accents, flanked by wrapped armrests. The ottoman has rounded corners and shares the grid and tufted accents. Dark-stained, rosewood block frames support the pieces, with the armrests of the chair having an extended bridle joint at the front and back ends. The Brazil Industries law labels remain affixed to the underside.

Percival Lafer was a Brazilian designer who studied architecture, but took over his father’s furniture business with his brothers after his father’s death, using his admiration for engineering and design to create iconic and widely embraced pieces that became classic examples of both Brazilian Modern and Mid Century Modern furniture design.

- wear and cracking to leather, somewhat dry in a few areas but overall still plush; crack in leather to upper right; nicks to wood finish; frame wobbly in areas.
