A limited edition lithograph on paper titled Stone Cloud by American artist Sam Francis (1923-1994), created in 1963. Sam Francis was a second-generation Abstract Expressionist particularly influenced by Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still. However, he didn’t pursue art until recovering from an air crash that led to spinal tuberculosis. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from the U.C. Berkeley, and became known for his paintings and prints that exhibit dripped pools and splotches of diluted pigments. He was included in Clement Greenberg’s 1964 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art titled Post-Painterly Abstraction. Other institutions that have exhibited and collected his work include the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.
