A 20th century ceremonial Bwa elephant mask from the Burkina Faso region, Africa. The carved wooden elephant mask displays carved protruding circular eyes, an upturned trunk, tusks and prominent ears. The surface is decorated with geometric patterns painted in black, white, and red. Masks of this nature were worn during ceremonies and at the funerals of high ranking men.

Condition

- small splits, scrapes and cracks, normal part of the patina attesting to the mask’s age and use.
