Antique Eglisomé Banjo Clock by William Cummens
Item Details
An antique William Cummens presentation or “banjo” wall clock featuring a reverse painted scene of the seafaring battle between the Hornet and Peacock. The mahogany case has a gilded front with brass cable details and an ivory painted iron dial with Roman numerals with iron hands and a single key arbor, inscribed “Warranted by William Cummens” and is behind a circular glass door. It has a gilt eagle finial at the apex above the face. There are reverse-painted eglisomé panels, the upper one featuring an eagle and shield with elaborate scroll and floral embellishment. The lower reverse-painted panel shows a depiction of the two battling sailing ships Hornet and Peacock. The battle scene is flanked by a gold-painted decorative painted frame, and below the panel is a giltwood pendant with orb detailing. The large brass pendulum is not marked. The clock comes with a winding key, brass pendulum, and metal weight.
