Vintage Oak Hoosier Style Kitchen Cabinet by Sellers

Item Details

A vintage oak Hoosier style kitchen cabinet by Sellers. This piece is of oak construction with metal hardware and latches bearing the Sellers ‘S’ logo, and the top cabinet stacks on the lower base. The leftmost of the three upper cabinet doors opens to reveal a flour hopper and sifter that swings out on sliding arms; to the interior of this door is hung a placard with useful weights and measures, and reminders of needed supplies. The other two upper cabinet doors open to reveal wood shelves and metal racks. A roll-top cabinet area occupies the bottom of the upper section with a badge reading “Sellers, Elwood, Ind.” The lower section is capped with a white enameled surface, beneath which are two half-width drawers with utensil dividers. A large cabinet drawer on the lower left opens to reveal a mechanical sliding tray that extends with the door, and a wire rack mounted to the inside. On the right are two single wooden drawers above a third that contains a metal bread box. The entire structure rests on four caster feet for ease of transport.

Sellers was the original manufacturer of the Hoosier style cabinet, beginning production in 1898 in Elwood, Indiana. Hoosier style cabinets remained a staple in American households until after World War II, when modern appliances rendered them largely obsolete.
