Unusual Handwoven Turkish "Shahmaran" Pictorial Wool Kilim
Item Details
An unusual and uncommon handwoven Turkish Shahmaran pictorial wool kilim. This flatweave accent rug is rendered in a palette of ivory, sky blue, scarlet, indigo, ochre, sand, and sage. The ivory colored field features four large-scale Shahmaran forms, which translates to ‘king of snakes’, even though the mythological creature is depicted with a female form, and considered a goddess, as the ‘Serpent Queen.’ The creatures feature both a serpent head and human head fitted with a headdress, while accompanied by cypress trees and bird motifs. Framing the field is a main sky blue grounded leaf border, and sawooth guard borders. Finishing this rug are double overcast selvedges and a cotton warp fringe to the ends. This rug is unlabeled. Please see the link below for more on the myth of the Shahmaran.
