Hand-Knotted Persian Kashmir "Archaeological" Wool Room Sized Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Kashmir wool room sized rug. This rug features an archaeological design, and is rendered in a palette of indigo, camel, ivory, cranberry, sky blue, rust, olive, wheat, and gold. The ornately designed indigo colored field begins with an ogee shaped pendant medallion infilled with an urn and bird image, along with an abundance of floral motifs and vine-work. The field is also densely populated with purling vines of palmettes, lancette leaves, and blossoms, as well as ewers and vase forms. A scalloped border frames the interior of the field that breaks to the outer borders, while featuring an array of flowers, animals, and medallions. Framing the field as a whole is a unique and highly detailed border displaying columns alternating with boteh filled panels, and calligraphy inscriptions along the caps, while the corners feature a pictorial animal scene. There is also another border patterned with medallion elements with split leaf motifs to the outer edges and ends. Finishing this rug are overcast selvedges and a cotton warp fringe to the ends, as well as vinyl bands sewn to the edges underside. This rug is labeled ‘Kashmir’.
