Antique Cherry Tennessee Two-Piece Jackson Press, Possibly Marshall County
Item Details
An antique cherry Tennessee two-piece Jackson press, possibly Marshall County, mid 19th century. The case features an upper section with a dovetailed top and a projecting cornice above a dentil-molded frieze and two double-paneled doors. The doors are fitted with wooden latches and they open to a four-shelf interior. The lower section has a rectangular top with applied mid-molding above two aligned and dovetailed, frieze drawers over two paneled doors. The scratchbeaded, poplar-lined drawers are fitted with wooden knobs and the doors open to a two-shelf interior. Both case sections are inlaid with lozenge-form escutcheons and the whole piece rises on stile legs ending in casters.
The interior of the lower, right door retains a label from the previous owner reading ‘This was made by David McGahey. 1st co. court clerk of Marshall Co.’

- to fair; frieze with some minor repairs to dentil molding and right side missing two small pieces; some small chips to mid-molding and a lip repair to front, center portion; hinges and wooden knobs are replacements; legs were possibly shortened and fitted with later casters; lower right door missing interior lock plate; others present but no key; other minor surface wear and imperfections and interior repairs as would be expected with age and use.
