Paul Chidlaw Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper

Item Details

An original mixed media painting on paper by well-listed American Abstract Expressionist Paul Chidlaw (Cincinnati, 1900 – 1989). The painting uses acrylic, watercolor, and ink to depict a composition made of broad strokes of red, blue, and yellow paint. A shape that appears to be a garlic or onion bulb is illustrated in purple ink to the left margin. The piece is unsigned, but the artist’s estate stamp is visible to its verso. The piece is presented without matting or framing, awaiting your choice of presentation.

Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
