An early 20th century alabaster sculpture titled Trinkende by Austrian sculptor Victor Heinrich Seifert (1870 – 1953). A frequent subject portrayed by the artist, this work features a semi-nude classical female figure drinking from a small bowl. The figure stands on a circular alabaster base that is affixed to a marble base. The artist’s inscribed signature present to back of alabaster base reads ‘Seifert FP’.
The work was purchased by Norwegian tennis player Ada Werring and her husband, Eivind Werring and has descended in their family. Starting her tennis career at the age of twelve representing the Oslo Tennis Club, Werring went on to win more than 35 Nordic and Norwegian tennis championships.
Born in Austria, Victor Heinrich Seifert studied at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Munich and the Berlin Kunstakademie under Ernst Herter, Ludwig Manzel and Peter Breuer. A member of the Artists Cooperative and the Association of Sculptors, he is especially known for his sculpture of Neoclassical figures and his work is internationally collected.
Condition
- slight oxidation scattered throughout surface; small nicks scattered throughout surface, especially visible to figure’s back and lower part of leg; some slight discoloration throughout.
