Afghan Rubab Stringed Instrument

An Afghan rubab stringed instrument from the lute family of instruments. The rubab originates from central Afghanistan, is one of the national instruments of Afghanistan and it is manufactured and played throughout West, Central, South and Southeast Asia. The piece features a wooden body (most likely mulberry), with hide top to the two Kasa or sound chambers. It includes nineteen hand carved Gushak or tuning pegs for the thirteen sympathetic strings, three drone strings and three main strings. The head stock features a pierced carved foliate design with attached colorful beaded tassels. The finger board includes three frets with ornate inlay to the top and sides of the neck.
