Hand-Knotted Persian Mahal Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Mahal area rug. This wool rug is rendered in a palette of coral, sapphire, cream and ochre. It begins with a large ogival medallion grounded in sapphire, with palmette pendants on four sides. The medallion rests on an open, coral field with soft-serrated spandrels grounded in cream and filled with elaborate palmettes. Framing the field are four borders, including a highly stylized herati pattern incorporating abstracted palmettes and flowers over sapphire. Minor borders include trefoil blossoms over ochre. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at each end with cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
