An oil painting on canvas by American artist Judge Edward (Ed) J. Hummer (20th century). This figural landscape depicts a man on horseback at the edge of an adobe village as another man walkes up the road towards it between grazing sheep, trees and other greenery scattered across the rocky ground and rendered in thick, impressionistic strokes of paint in the light of a late afternoon. It is signed to the lower right and presented unframed as a stretched canvas.

Judge Edward (Ed) J. Hummer was born in Weehawken, New Jersey and received his formal education at the University of Notre Dame studying fine arts and accounting. Later he received a Doctorate in Jurisprudence but continued his art education while traveling to Paris, France. Hummer studied privately with painter Carl Kappas, C. Curry Bohm, and Fred W. Rigley in Brown County, Indiana. Hummer is best known for his landscapes, in particular the Colorado Rockies and figurative landscapes of the United States and Mexico. He primarily works in oil paintings and pastel creating rich and vibrant scenes. Hummer’s work is housed in private collections across the United States.
