A hand-knotted Persian Heriz serapi area rug. This wool rug features a rectilinear medallion-and-corners design in a palette of ruby, ivory, rose, azure, emerald, ochre and charcoal. It begins with a large-scale layered medallion with eight outer lobes, each containing a geometric palmette. The medallion rests on a hexagonal ruby field with deep, multi-phased spandrels. Populating the field and corners are a variety of flowers, palmettes, foliates and stylized vines. Compound borders include a wide, highly stylized herati main border, which is grounded in charcoal, featuring geometric palmettes, oak leaves and rosettes. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with ivory wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
