Hand-Knotted Romanian Chess/Checkers Accent Rug

A hand-knotted Romanian chess/checkers accent rug. This wool rug features a grid of black and white squares and rectangles consisting of eight blocks across and eight down. The grid is framed by three borders, the innermost of which is sapphire colored, featuring Arabic numerals 1 through 8 on one side, the Roman letters A through H on another side, and Arabic-style lettering on the remaining two sides. Each of the patterned outer borders features a floral-meander, one over ivory, the other over sapphire. The outer guard border is coral. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with an embroidered kilim skirt and long, knotted ivory warp fringe.
