Antique Mahogany Chippendale Style Slant Front Desk
Item Details
An antique Chippendale style mahogany slant front desk. This possibly American desk features a rectangular top over a slant front desk, which opens to a shell carved center stack of drawers, flanked by scalloped trim over divided storage and small drawers. The desk sits over four graduated drawers with hand cut dovetailing. The drawers each have two bails on batwing plates, and the slant top and each drawer have a centered escutcheon on a batwing plate. The case rises on scrolled bracket feet with some evidence of restoration.
To the back is an antiquated label attributing ownership to Mary Elizabeth Saunders (born circa 1849), sister to architect Charles Willard Saunders (circa 1853-1935), to whom the desk may have later belonged.
