New Mexican Retablo and Other Religious Wood Carvings

A New Mexican retablo carved wooden painting and four additional carved wooden religious figurines. The retablo features a carved and cutout wooden ground with a hand-painted depiction of the Spanish Saint Raymund Nonnatus, patron saint of childbirth, holding a monstrance in one hand and a palm branch in the other hand. The piece retains its explanatory typewritten note to the verso marked ‘S. Ramon Nonato’ and signed ‘Rosaria Santa Fe’. The collection also includes a carved wooden monk figurine signed J.R. to the underside; a carved wooden figural martyr vase signed illegibly to the underside; a carved wooden nativity scene with two hinged doors; and a carved wooden St. Michael the Archangel figurine; marked ‘San Miguel’ and signed ‘Ernesto Riveu’ with the location ‘C. Rojo Puerto Rico’ in black ink to the underside.
