Item Details

Signed

A lithograph on paper titled On the East River created in 1935 by well-listed artist and printmaker Nicolai Cikovsky (Polish / American; 1894 – 1984). The Social Realist work depicts two men, presumably homeless due to the Great Depression, resting along the banks of New York’s East River among scattered newspaper pages. One figure wears a dark suit, sitting dejectedly with his head leaning against his right hand, as his companion attempts to sleep, using his folded suit jacket as a pillow. The work is signed ‘Nicolai Cikovsky 35’ in graphite to the lower right and titled to the lower left. It is matted in cream and presented under glass in a wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.
