A circa 1900 Walter Baker & Co. Ltd. advertising metal sign La Belle Chocolatiere after the original pastel on canvas by French artist Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702-1789) The lithographically printed image with areas of chromolithographic stippling features a female figure carrying a serving tray with a glass and a cup of chocolate. In 1862, Walter Pierce, the then owner of Walter Baker & Co. Ltd. purchased the copyright of the image for reproduction in the company’s advertising. It is presented without glass or mat in a carved wooden frame with a gilt trim border. It is ready to hang with a wire to the verso and a printout regarding a similar sign is affixed to the verso.
