Carmel Vitullo was raised in Federal Hill, a small Italian community of Rhode Island. After studying painting at the Rhode Island School of Design, she pursued photography at the New York Institute of Photography. Particularly inspired by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, she adopted a snapshot, documentary aesthetic photographing various neighborhoods, communities, and people, including jazz icons Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Vitullo describes her work as ‘street photography,’ capturing the vernacular beauty in the fleeting moments and local subjects of the 1950s and 60s urban landscape. Vitullo’s debut was in The Family of Man exhibition by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1955. Her work has also been represented by the RISD Museum, the Bert Gallery, the Newport Art Museum, and the Block Island Historical Society, among other institutions.Condition
