An oil painting on canvas titled Edw. R. Hertz by well-listed artist Beth Hertz (Dayton/New York, b. 1920). The work depicts a colorful, expressive portrait of the artist’s son around the age of five, cast in a vibrant yellow hued light with blue shadows and ground. It is signed ‘Eliz. Hertz’ to the lower right as well as titled, dated, and inscribed with the subject’s age to the verso. This piece is presented unframed as an unstretched canvas.

Beth Hertz studied with Stanton MacDonald-Wright and was influenced by early 20th-century Synchromism, a modernist American movement that explored the relationship between color and music. Hertz studied at the Art Students League in New York, the Dayton Art Institute, and received her MFA at Ohio University. Her paintings have been collected by museums as well as private and corporate collections in New York, Massachusetts, Ohio, Iowa and California.

- horizontal creases at regular intervals throughout painting with significant cracks in paint; discoloration throughout painting concentrated along lower edge and corners; 1" crescent-shaped tear to piece in center left; wear to edges indicitive of previous mounting includes folds, fraying to canvas, wear and cracks to gesso, and holes to ground; patch in upper right to verso; discoloration and foxing to canvas verso.
