Antique Victorian Adjustable "X Piano Taboret" by L. Postawka & Co.
Item Details
An antique Victorian adjustable X Piano Taboret by L. Postawka & Co., late 19th century. The wooden, mahogany-stained frame features a rectangular, padded seat in later, floral-patterned fabric. It rises on an adjustable, curule-form base with applied bosses and lateral, turned knobs activating wooden gears.
The underside retains a variety of paper labels, one of which reads ‘The X Piano Taboret. / Manufactured By / L. Postawka & Co., / Factory At Rhodes’ Planing Mill, / State Street, Cambridgeport, Mass. / Patented April 4, 1871.’
Another label is printed ‘Awarded To / L. Postawka & Co., / Cambridgeport, Mass. / The United States Centennial Commission announces the following as the…of an award / to Louis Postawka & Co., Cambridgeport, / Mass., for Piano Stool. Report. – For ingenuity / of construction, and firmness and immovability / when in use. / A.T. Goshorn, Director-General. / J.R. Hawley, President. / Attest: J.L. Campbell, Secretary.’
In addition, there are two partially obscured labels, addressed to the public, which explain the benefits of using the stool.

Condition
- to fair; frame with scattered scratches and nicks as would be expected with age and use; seat upholstery with a stain in the center; upholstery is later; some losses to labels.
