Tiffany Studios and Manhattan Brass Student Lamp with Favrile Glass Shade
Item Details
A brass student lamp from the Manhattan Lamp Company featuring a Tiffany Studios favrile glass shade. This piece features intricate wire work to the body, including raised beads and twisted coils. Opposite the chimney rests a Tiffany shade, combed with blue and green iridescent glass. This piece bears a slightly crinkled finish, characteristic of the hand-wrought appearance of favrile glass. The lamp bears an impressed mark to the sconce: ‘Manhattan, Dec 25, 77 – May 20, 79’ and a model number to the center post: ‘25568.’ This piece is likely dated c. 1890s-1920s. Student lamps were designed to eliminate the shadows created by a traditional lamp form, utilized as early as the mid 19th century. This particular style of iridescent glass was patented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1894.
